Ice's Word - Ice-T's Rap School Episode 4

Rs_4_1

Ice gives us the skinny on this week's show after the jump.

On Mary's concern that people might come to the group's first performance to laugh at them:

Rs_4_4Initially, some people may think that about the show. I did an interview on Wendy WilliamsVideo_icon where one of the guys on the show told me, "Hey, you guys are making fun of hip-hop." I said, "Honestly, dog, I would never let anybody make fun of hip-hop because I've been eating off of it too long. You've got to see the show." You just do. There are laughs, but when you laugh, you turn around and you kind of feel sorry because these kids grab you. It goes beyond race, it goes beyond class. When you really get into it, you just seek the people. I think even from the first show, from Sophia's transition from saying "I'm going to get raped" in the Bronx, to saying, "It's a lot of love," people gotta dig that.

On making Sophia the manager of the group:

Rs_4_2She's such a busybody and she wants to be in charge. When people have too much energy, you have to diffuse it by giving them a lot of work. If you didn't, she'd just get in everybody else's business and make a problem. So I'm like, "I'll maximize your brain space by overloading you, and then that way you'll be quiet." If you keep telling me you're so smart, I'm going to put you to the test. And then by putting her in charge of those kids, she was facing the same issues I was. That kind of mellowed her out. I knew what I was doing.

On Leir Video_icon:

Rs_4_3He got on my nerves. See, Leir was a problem from the beginning. He's a clown, but he also whines and moans. When I gave him that gold mic on an early episode and Sam went against that choice, he had a right to do that because Leir had been messing up. But I gave him the mic for a reason. I figured, if I put this on him, it'll engage him and let him believe he has a chance. I figure that he could figure, "I don't have a chance, I might as well mess up."

Later, Sophia told me that Leir was messing up on a challenge, and so I confronted him. He told me, "I could be playing basketball, I could be doing this, I could be doing that. I'm wasting my time." And I was like, "Yo, dude. I got seven kids that are really hungry and really trying to do this. You ain't got to be here. It doesn't have any change on me. You can go." And I think I might have been the first person to call his bluff. It was a changing moment, he didn't know how to react and then for one day he was gone. When he came back, his spot was replaced. The kids told him that if he wanted to come back, he had to apologize. It was a big lesson, like, if you're on a team, you're on a team. If you fall off, you hurt everybody.
