The Celebreality Interview: Tina Yothers

Cfc4e6_34_1

On Sunday's finale episode of Celebrity Fit Club 4, Tina Yothers was named the big winner (or is that loser?), having shed 21.8 percent of the body weight she had when she started the competition. After the jump, Tina talks about her time on the show, motherhood and her plan for staying fit.

How was your experience on the show?

I had a fabulous experience. I went into it with the attitude of wanting to change my whole life. I took advantage of every moment and made it work to my benefit. Which some people didn't.

Oh really?

I don't really think I need to name names.

Well, I will: you really stepped it up when Angie became difficult. What inspired you to take that initiative, instead of throwing up your hands?

Well, we did that. We definitely hit a wall a couple of times because we kept hitting the same issues over and over again and she was being so stubborn. But that's when someone needs help the most – when they don't think they need help. She was luckily able and big enough to turn around and say, "You know what? This is actually good for me and these people actually care about me." She's a grown woman, so it's good that she was able to rise above it and confront it.

Would you say that CFC was a bonding experience?

Yeah. It was a great cast, we hit it off from day one. The whole cast came in the very first day of shooting ready to attack. Going into it with that attitude made for a good, positive team.

Had you watched CFC before you appeared on it?

Yeah. It's an inspiring show. There's a lot of reality shows, especially ones featuring celebrities, that are platforms for crazy people. This show's just different, it's positive all the way around. It's how you react to it and you treat it. Going into it, people were like, "Aren't you afraid that they're going to make you look bad?" But on the first day, I thought, "You know what? On reality TV, you're your own worst enemy. You can say whatever the hell you want to say, or you can refrain from saying it." Our producer, Richard and everyone else on the set, they weren't looking for drama. They'd capture it if you gave it to them, but they weren't pushing it. So, I felt from the beginning that I was in a good place.

Is there anyone from the show that you still keep in touch with?

Oh yeah. Carnie and I talk almost everyday. I knew before I met Carnie that we were going to be friends. I'd seen her in interviews and we're very similar. We have a lot in common with our baby girls.

At what point did you realize that you could win the percentage of body weight loss prize?

I knew before I started the show. I'm really competitive. Not in a crazy, I'll-rip-your-head-off way, but I love a challenge. I'm not Superwoman, but I just know that I have it in me, that I can do it. I had my challenge, don't get me wrong. Erika was, I don't know how else to say it but, balls-out. She gave me a run for my money. She was just as determined and just as strong and just as eager to win. I had my moments of, "Oh man, this might be tougher than I thought," but I knew I had it in me.

What was the biggest challenge?

What hurt me was that I over-trained a couple of times and I hurt myself. I hurt my tendon, I hurt a joint and those things don't heal overnight. It's not like a sore muscle. So I was down for a week or two here and there from doing cardio. I hurt my knee and then I hurt my elbow. The elbow wasn't bad, but with the knee, I couldn't walk. I couldn't do cardio and it was killing me.

What's your fitness regimen like these days?

I work out at least four days a week. I've been trying to make it to the gym all day today, but it's just been nuts (laughs). I've been doing my NutriSystem Monday through Friday. And then weekends, I'm on my own.

Does that mean a food free-for-all?

It's a free-for-all. It has been, only because we went those three months on the show, so I've been catching up on all the things I missed. But for the most part, I'm pretty cautious. Beer and nachos and salsa are something I could probably do a lot less of, but when I do go the gym, it's more cardio to make up for it. I haven't gained any weight, so I'm proud of that. Although, I stopped counting because that whole weight/number thing was neurotic. If I go the gym and I step on the scale, by the time I leave, I've either lost 2 lbs. or gained 2 lbs. We don't have a scale in the house. I can pretty much tell now. I'm at a size 8. I have some 6 items that are comfortable, so between a 6 and an 8 really. To go from size 18 to that, I'm pretty stoked. And to go back to the weight numbers thing, as soon as the show ended, I started working out with weights. During the show, I didn't use any weights. I just did cardio and resistance bands because muscle weighs more than fat and for me to build muscle would have probably added pounds at certain points. So, we didn't touch weights. My trainer just started me. But I've been between 148 and 150. I'm going to do Dr. Ian's detox again, and I think I'm going to incorporate that every few months. That's a 9-day detox program and it feels good to do. It's a good cleansing diet. I like it.

Was your outlook on your body informed at all from growing up in the spotlight and Hollywood's ridiculously skewed standards?

Absolutely not. My parents kept me out of the Hollywood life. We lived 35, 40 miles outside of L.A. We lived in a normal neighborhood. You know, we didn't live next to anyone in show business. I didn't go clubbing with my mom when I was 16 (laughs). Maybe I missed out on some fun, but they kept me grounded and I was confident with who I was. I had no questions as far as any of that went. I didn't feel pressure to look like anyone else, act like anyone else, be anyone else. That's a good parenting job, I think. And I can only hope to do the same with Lily.

So what's next for you, Tina?

Doing the show has definitely sparked my interest in doing some acting and getting back into the grind. I’m talking to a couple of agents and seeing what's out there. For a long time after Family Ties, it was just B.S. stuff that I didn't have to do and I didn't want to do, and going that route would be completely selling out. I was more interested in doing my music and I did that and I love it and I love writing, recording and performing. My friend who's a DJ here in LA set up my MySpace. And raising Lily, of course. I know that we talked about it a lot on the show, but there's a lot that wasn't included on the episodes. A lot of the theme of the show was for all of us, and the new mothers especially, to have confidence. And that's especially because we all have girls. If we don't have confidence, it's going to be a lot harder for us to instill that in them. The episode with me on the beach with Lily for the first time, she's not going to remember that, but I always want her to remember that I'm not afraid to do that. I want her first memories to be of me feeling good about myself and I want her to feel the same way.
