The Celebreality Interview - Sullee

Wr_5_30_1

Sullee's not a snitch, he's not a bitch, he's not a f***ing kid, and yet, he still has plenty to say. After the jump, the Boston native talks about his shocking forfeit, explains his reasons for voting for Bush and reveals why Jus Rhyme and John Brown make him sick to his stomach.

Serch took issue with you comparing the final challenge to snitching. He wondered how it would be possible to snitch on anyone when you're on a reality show and cameras are following you constantly. What do you have to say to that?

Honestly, if I was there with you and you robbed a bank and that was on video, should I say that you robbed the bank? It's the same thing, isn't it? I was always taught that snitching isn't always for something illegal. If you tell on someone for cursing when you're 6-years-old, then you're being a little rat. If he had said to me, "I want you to go write a battle rhyme about each other," I would have done that, but for $100,000 go tell me why this is their fault? There's a problem there. Your putting a price on what I need to do, and I was not there for the money. I could use the money, but I wasn't there for it. I was there because I love hip-hop.

What about the suggestion that you were melting under pressure? Did that have anything to do with you leaving the competition?

No, absolutely not. I was forgetting my rhymes because I was getting personal and deep with my rhymes. I put everything out there, like when I rhymed about alcohol. I was an alcoholic. It is what it is. But I mean, I'm good. I'm fine. But it was something really personal to me.

So the pressure of the show didn't get to you at all?

Honestly, I'm not the type of person who's rattled by stuff like that.

But in the middle of the episode, after the dog challenge, you seemed really fed up.

Fed up is different than buckling under pressure. Fed up is being aggravated. I was sick of always being on, for lack of a better word, the s***ty team. Every time, I knew I was going to lose before I even started. I'm a winner. I like to win. 'Cause that's how winners talk.

In one of the VSPOT extras, one of the Ego Trip guys reveals that Jus Rhyme wondered out loud, "Is quitting a white-boy thing?" after you left and then Jon Boy sort of followed suit. Is it?

If Jus Rhyme wants to know if it's a white-boy thing, he should look in the mirror and ask himself. Because at the end of the day, when he goes to bed, he's still white. As hard as he tries, he's still white. Honestly, now that I don't have to deal with him, he makes me sick. Someone who's that upset to be who they are, come on man, you've gotta be kidding me.

So, you think the show accurately portrayed his bleeding heart?

Oh, he was well beyond bleeding heart. He made Hillary Clinton look like a Nazi. Jus Rhyme makes me sick to my stomach. So does John Brown.

Really?

They're both trying so hard to be accepted. God knows who John Brown is trying to impress, because he doesn't know where he wants to be. He doesn't know if he wants to be in the suburbs or the ghetto or the jungle or a third-world country. He always looks like someone asked him a really tough question and he doesn't know the answer, but it’s written on the tip of his nose and he’s trying to see what it is.

Isn't the quest for acceptance a necessary part of any performer’s life?

You could say that if you wanted to, but did you see me try to get accepted by anybody?

Well, you were on TV…

I still wasn't trying to get accepted. I was me the entire time. Everybody that watched the show with me at the bar down the street from my house was like, “There’s Bobby getting into a fight. There’s Bobby trying to get into bed with the blonde girl. There’s Bobby flipping people off and laughing about it.”

The camera didn't alter anything?

If you’re going to have to alter who you are in front of a camera, you’re obviously not a good person.

Yeah, but it often just happens that way that the camera turns out to be this great variable.

I think Jus Rhyme goes home and runs around screaming racial slurs, because he’s so busy not doing that. If the cameras affect you then you’re not being you. If you can’t be yourself, you’re not gonna sell records, because eventually you’re gonna mess up and people are gonna rip you apart. There is going to be a time when John Brown’s not on his game, and he’s going to say something stupid. It’s going to happen because he’s so busy thinking about everything he says, when a person like me or Persia or $hamrock just says what’s on our mind.  To each his own, but I think that’s the better way to be. If you can be yourself all the time, then you never have to act at all.

Besides Jus Rhyme and John Brown, were you cool with everybody else?

Oh yeah. I love G-Child. She’s such a nice girl. Me and her would always go outside together because nobody else would smoke with us. Persia and me still talk to this day, everyday. She is one of the nicest girls you’ll ever meet in your life, it’s just you can’t cross her because she’s too real. $ham is a good kid.

And then there’s Misfit. What did you think of the way the show portrayed your relationship with her?

It was funny. I mean, nothing happened, so I wasn't too worried about it.

The show encourages discourse on race. Is that something you’re used to discussing?

Race? No. I come from a multi-racial family. My dad’s Irish, my mom’s Italian, Greek and German and then my dad’s brother married a black woman. So race has never been a problem.

But working in hip-hop, you’re confronted with it regularly, right?

People come at me like that, but once they get to know me and get to know my family, they’re like, “Oh, s***, we should shut up about that one.” They put their foot in their mouth…I’m so aggravated that Jus Rhyme said that!

You should really check out the video for yourself – I don’t want to be stirring things up with third-hand information.

No, it’s all right. I mean, honestly? I’m not a big fan, anyway. I was sitting there looking at him on the sidelines the entire time I was there and thinking, If it came down to it, he won’t be able to come at me because he’s so busy trying to change the universe. If it came down to it and it was me versus him, I would have ripped him apart. What’s he gonna do? Hug me? Give me some flowers? Clean my room? One of the last things I said to him before I left was, “Dude, why are you so sorry for everything?” He is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met in my life. It’s just the fact that he’s so anti-himself. How are you a white person and anti-white? You know Clayton Bigsby from Chappelle’s Show? Black white supremacist? That’s the opposite of Jus Rhyme. Jus Rhyme is a white Black Panther. When I met him and he started talking, my jaw dropped.

Do you have any resentment for Serch?

I really like Serch. I can never say nothin' bad about somebody who’s been nothing but nice to me.

He didn't seem that nice after you ejected yourself from the competition.

Yes he was. He looked at me and he pretty much, with his eyes, gave me a chance to stay. But then when I took my shoes off I was like, “Can't stay now.”

John Brown said you voted for Bush in his rhyme. Is that true?

Maybe.  I don’t think that matters.

Well, he brought it up.

Yeah, I did.

It must be interesting to be a conservative rapper.

I’m not conservative. I’m not a conservative Republican that wants to blow up Iraq. I believe in an independent party. I think we should have an independent president, because Democrats and Republicans are both full of s***. See? I can get political like Jus Rhyme, too! But I voted for Bush because we're at war, and I didn’t trust John Kerry. Plain and simple: I did't feel like dying. If we're at war, we don't need someone that wants to have peace because peace isn’t going to win a war. War's going to win a war.

Is your album still set to be called Destiny?

Maybe. It’s been out there for so long that I might change it and make it something that kicks people in the chest a little more. It’s due this summer.

You’re still recording it?

Nah, it’s pretty much done. I’m doing mixtapes right now, banging out two of them. I was in the studio last night from 9 to 11 a.m. this morning. I go hard, I grind.

When are the mixtapes going to be out?

It should be soon. One’s called American Psycho, it’s all going to be based on the movie American Psycho, and the other one’s called The Frustration of Middle America. They go hand-in-hand. They’re both going to touch on the same topics, because the frustration of middle America is we’re all American psychos.

Was the show overall a good experience for you?

It was a great experience. I appreciated every moment that I was on that show. I don’t want people to think I just walked away, whining, “I’m not gonna do this anymore!” I wasn't trying to be an a****** about it. I was aggravated with the situation. It’s funny, I got a lot of emails the day after I left and I thought people were going to be like, “What are you doing?  Why did you leave?” Everybody whose profile said Boston, Mass., was like, “Yo, you rep Boston for real. That’s how we would have done it.” Whether it was right, wrong or indifferent I stood by what I said. At the end of the day, if you get your house taken away and your car taken away and you’re naked in the middle of the street by yourself shivering,  you still have your balls and you still have your word.

Keep up with Sullee via his MySpace.

Sullee article was a great insight on who he really is. I don't think he is a good rapper. And he has the worst attitude. Rappers usually have bad attitudes after they are famous. I am happy he is not on the show. There are plenty of talented rappers out there if there is another season please find some real talent.

Danny Gable

Wow talk about bitter! Dude snaps at just about every question asked. I deal with people daily that have different views and outlooks on life and even deal with people that are probably on the fake-side too... do you seen my screaming and whining about it? No. How can you be mad at the world dude? You're only 22.

samantha

I read the comments and reread the interview.. I think he is talented, a little cocky, but some may even say he is confindent... I wish him much success because he is real!! 22 he's got a long way to go

Tahiyyah

Yo I give Sullee mad respect!! I don't care what others said I really think he's talented so however he does it he should keep doing it.
~ONE~

Cool-C

I just really don't get why he quit. He clearly has talent and the chops to at least be near the end. He lasted through all those eliminations for some reason, right?

stacy

the forehead on new yorks mom needs to be covered, we can't bear to look at it any longer, the bee's were atracted to it...new york your's is not very far behind, cover that thing up...not to mention that your mom has the looks of an ugggglllly woman, or is she ? i think if she had a comb over she would be a great man, dump the UGLY mom with the head like a bowling ball

cantgetright

these cats are wack, i got love for sullee, he got flow, but the rest of these cats are garbage. check the myspace, astronauts, northside c.h.i. u want a white rapper you'll find one. no catch phrases, no gimmicks, no cause, no weight problems, just ill lyrics

Valerie B

Food for thought, you know maybe it was like doggin some one out. So what? hip hop is referred to the game. You have to play to get paided. To use another cliche its not show friends its show business...If Sulle and John Boy ( you know the guy in the back ground) had a prob' well its was thier time. They made it easier for the rest by selling them self short. The dis' is a critical part of the game. Preasure is on....4 little wrappers sitting on the wall....bet Jus is the next to fall, the John Brown with his Holler this and crossed eyes, ignorance is the only thing he sells....peace

bouncingsoul

I don't really care about rap, but this show is funny to me. Sullee, you should not have quit. You were better than any of these other four left. Some advice for Jus Rhyme and Jon Brown, STOP TRYING SO HARD!!! Good luck Shamrock.

fedreserve

man i wish i knew about tryouts i woulda tore it up when there in the ice box writing i could juss come out and freestyle better than there writtens sully was a bitch there all bitches except persia was coll adn shamrock really the only one with a lil talent but they cant do it like me if i was on i woulda won right off the jump

Tommy Surgs

Yo, all these rappers are garbage. Does anyone know how I can get onto Season 2? when do the tryouts take place? lemme know ... [email protected]

Random Backpacker #3425678

Here is a hint to all those who think they can flow better and should be on the show. Sacha says the produces didn't want some white nerdy backpacakin' boring cipher spitter... they want people with character and that are interesting to watch. Your everyday random backpacker cipher spitter gets boring after about 60 seconds and that is being generous.

sohei

Weak flow. No understanding of politics. Piss-poor attitude. Shallow and superficial. I figure Sullie just barely escaped elimination on each show solely because the producers liked the conflict he caused. Hope you enjoyed your fifteen seconds, Sullie!

Jus Rhyme stumbles sometimes (my wife says he can be "cringe-worthy" at times), but his heart's in the right place and that should count for something. I don't understand all this "You try too hard!" whining that gets directed towards him - why is it bad to work hard and care about things other than Bentleys and 'hos? I concede that Shamrock is probably a more talented performer, but IMO he lacks depth and a message.

If Jus gets the $100,000, I'm guessing he'll do something constructive and meaningful with it - well, something better than blowing it on strippers and booze like trailer park superstar Sullie would probably do. Jus is clearly the underdog right now, but I'm pulling for him.

Oh, and Sullie, German + Irish + Italian + Greek does not equal interracial. It equals white. There is a race problem in America right now, despite the predilections of people like you to claim "color blindness." You only need to look back to the Katrina aftermath to see the proof.

samantha

Look at the Katrina aftermath.. ok if they were poor white people do you think they would have gotten out quicker,,, and reread the article he says he has an aunt that is black.. so his cousins are biracial.. that equals interracial family...

Faze1

with sullie gone, shamrocks the one my bets are on, persia got an aight flow, john brown should find out the results at home, i wouldn't give you a second chance if u made u a clone, king of the burbs, u the only one willing to fight for that throne,im an enti-,you'll get smacked b4 u finish the word, speak my name you'll be extinct like a dodo bird, ur the king of the burbs, then meet the king of the verbs, halleluya holla back, get urself a new catchphrase, or step the the man called faze.

I remember Sullee doing a freesteez on Weekend VIBE and it was nice. I thought he would do better, but things happen. I hope he can regroup and get himself together. Boston needs to represent. It's been a while since Benzino, the Mighty RSO and ED O.G. Bulldogs.

Tiffany

Persia got kicked off and now the show sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who is search gonna pick to win tha king of the burbs?????? If Shamrock soesn't win than watching this show was a waste of time

ariana

sullee was being stupid for forfeiting...he should have snitched cuz jon boy was being annoying anywayz...john brown is hilarious, he's definitely an entity, there's no one else like him...go john brown!

drummergroupie

I think it's kind of funny that he's so concerned with Jus. It's like... Dude, if you have such a problem with someone who is promoting an anti-racist message, maybe YOU'RE the one running around screaming racial slurs. I don't know, I don't have a problem with Jus or his message, I think that he's a bit extreme, but it's a message that needs to be put out there.

But whatever. I never liked Sullee. He pretends to be so real, but there's nothing real about reality TV and he shouldn't be trying to convince people it is. Eventually, everyone will see through this bull and move on. And the fact that he quit... That's very rapper of him. There are a lot of TRUE rappers, with REAL skill, who deserved that opportunity more than he did, and he gave it up. He's dead as far as I'm concerned. I hope he's successful with his cowardice.
