Breaking Bonaduce Recap - Season 2, Episode 5: Boxing Bonaduce

Bb2_e5_13

Q: How do you break a man who's already broken?

A: Throw him in the ring with heavyweight champ Justin Fortune.

Bb2_e5_14

That'll straighten him right out.

The episode starts with the reunited-and-it-feels-so-tentative Bonaduces talking to Dr. Garry Video_icon...

Bb2_e5_1

Danny says he's trying to be a better man so that he can move back into his bedroom with his wife. Commenting on his behavior, Gretchen says a ratings system is necessary: "B.M." for "before maniac" and "A.M." for "after maniac." Good try, but too simplistic Gretch. In these parts, we have a four-level system we like to call the Meltdown Meter. Two levels simply aren't enough to capture Danny's complicated psyche.

And speaking of that meter...uh, we won't. At least not for a while: this episode Video_icon finds Danny slowly adjusting into living with his family again, so he's on his best behavior.

Well, that's if you consider Xeroxing your penis good behavior...

Bb2_e5_4

Apparently it comes out looking weird...

Bb2_e5_5

...Gretchen comments that it comes out looking like a "turkey's neck." Ew. Danny, however, isn't even bothered by the comparison.

Bb2_e5_6

A dude totally OK with potentially disparaging remarks about his stuff? Is Danny gunning for sainthood or something?

Danny was allowed back into the house on the condition that he'd sleep in the guest room, instead of his former bedroom with Gretchen. He's frustrated at this, as he explains to Gretchen as they smoke romantically in front of the fire...

Bb2_e5_7

He says that the sleeping setup is weird and awkward, but "no more jarring than my behavior has been." Amen to that. He's taking his lumps so well, you'd swear he were preparing to play the mashed potatoes in Thanksgiving: The Musical.

Even Isabella notices the change in Danny. She explains that she recently watched Rent with Gretchen and cried at the end. "It would make you cry, considering how soft you've gotten."

Bb2_e5_8

Ha!

Bb2_e5_10

Stay puffed, Danny Boy. Dante finds the situation hilarious...

Bb2_e5_9

...because Dante has impeccable taste in comedy.

That there's been no sign of a meltdown yet could have something to do with what we see next:

Bb2_e5_11

Can you say "catharsis?"

Or maybe it's...

Bb2_e5_12

...being literally hit on the head with the fact that your situation could always be worse?

Things are going too smoothly (Gretchen remarks during a lunch with Isabella that Danny "hasn't been yelling or anything"). Danny's temper flares briefly but noticeably enough to get our meter going...

Danny_level1_100_4Danny assesses his living situation

Toward the end of the episode, Danny sits with Dr. Garry and tells him he's uncomfortable in his own house. "That's my mansion, that's the house that Danny built!" he says to Dr. Garry. He also says that he doesn't understand how long he'll be relegated to the guest room -- if his penance of sorts will have to somehow correlate to all the stress he caused Gretchen by cheating. Dr. Garry asks Danny what will happen if he's cooped up in the room for too long, and here's where he starts to freak a little. Danny says, "Girls, and then booze, and then drugs, and then violence...I think my life would come back!" His life or Breaking Bonaduce Season 1. However you want to say it.

We see Danny sitting in his room...

Bb2_e5_16

...and it really is kinda small. You don't even have to be in there for it to give you cabin fever. "Honestly, though: I have been bailed out of more luxurious accommodations," he says. Maybe his tattoos offer clues on how to escape?

Danny, You're in exactly the same position you were in a year ago, except now Gretchen has you believing that it's your fault. All the while, Dr. Gary continues to validate Gretchen's position and never confronts her about who and what she really is. Contrary to what she says, Gretchen is elated that you cheated on her. Now she has an excuse to continue to treat you as she always has. And you're buyin' it! That pastor is the first person to offer you reasonable advice. I hope you take it. Your real prison is the belief that you have nothing besides Gretchen and total mania. You might consider that there are far more available options than your self imposed limit of door #1 and door #2.

I think Danny should be grateful to still have gretchen and the kids in his life after all the crap he's done. He needs to learn CONSEQUENCE, that he can't just be this maniac and nothing will result from it. I think he's always been able to do whatever he wants and no one has ever given him any boundaries in his life as a kid, and it's poured over into his adult life.

he's lucky to have gretchen. not many women would put up with this ass.

michelle mayhan

Are you really that crazy? (lol) Your wife should have taken you into the ring and whooped your ass. Maybe then you wouldnt need couples therapy. She could just beat all the anger out on ya!:) he he he Maybe she could tie your hands behind your back and slug away, lmao.
